We’re recruiting management team members!

What does that even mean?

When you volunteer at a Special Olympics Maryland event, do you ever notice there’s quite a few people wearing the same Special Olympics Maryland shirts in bright colors? Usually helping direct volunteers, running staging tents/areas, or just holding a clipboard and seems to have all the answers? Chances are, that person belongs to a management team. Management teams are volunteers who spend a bit more time in the world of Special Olympics Maryland, and help run sport venues, large scale games, and the local programs! As we head into the Summer Season (and yes, towards Summer Games!) we are looking to expand our roster of Management Team members for our Softball, Cheer, Bocce, and Pickleball statewide competitions.

In this role, you would be working directly with the Sports Director in charge of your chosen team, as well as the other team members. You would attend meetings, qualifiers, and ultimately, the State Championship for the sport, assisting with a specific role like logistics, control center management, awards lead, etc. This is an excellent leadership opportunity, and offers ways to either learn more about a sport you already love, or become stronger in skills like project management, communication, event management, and more.

And while you’re here, the SOMD volunteer team is seeking…

Last year, we had our first Summer Games Volunteer Management Committee, a group of individuals who lead volunteer engagement at each of the Summer Games venues on Saturday and Sunday of the games! This is a great opportunity for someone interested in a more hands on leadership experience, project management, volunteer management, or who is curious about what it looks like to curate the SOMD volunteer experience! The application is now live on somd.org/volunteer/volunteer-opportunities.

We are very fortunate to have such talented, passionate, compassionate, and willing to learn individuals that make up the SOMD volunteer family. If you’re interested in learning more about any of the management teams, even if it would be your first time doing something like this experience, don’t be afraid to reach out! Special Olympics Maryland as a whole was founded by three men who took a chance, and it continues thanks to volunteers like you who are willing to be brave in the attempt! Hear about our Founders’ story straight from them in an interview led by athlete leader, Sam Livingston:https://youtu.be/DPjeqSPXObQ?si=MBXclgiQ5JzTMult
