Special Olympics Maryland: How to Get Involved

There are many ways you can get involved with Special Olympics and Be A Champion! You can volunteer, you can become a Unified Partner, you can make a donation…. are you a family member? Find out more about our programs for the families of our athletes. Your support helps to transform the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities and helps to build interactive inclusive communities of dignity and respect. Through sport, we are creating a world where opportunity is not limited by disability.

Did you know that an athlete does not pay to participate in Special Olympics? But the cost for one athlete to compete in one sport for a full season of training and competition is $203. Your gift will help us provide more seasons and opportunities to individuals with intellectual disabilities throughout Maryland. Click below to transform a life through the power of sport.

Did you know that you can double your donation with a matching gift?  Companies often offer matching gift donations for their employees. Click here to see if your company participates.

Special Olympics would not exist today — and could not have been created — without the time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm of its volunteers. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience.

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.

We offer athletes the opportunity to choose from 27 sports and 3 sport seasons.  Every county in Maryland offers opportunities for training and competition.

The SOMD family network is critical to the continued success of this organization, as family members so often go above and beyond by volunteering as coaches, chaperones, Management Team Members, fund-raisers, and most of all, vocal and impassioned ambassadors.
