I have a current “traditional” coach sport certification that is valid until next year, but I have never completed the Coaching Special Olympics Athletes (CSOA) course. Do i need to complete CSOA now in order to continue to coach?

No, all existing coach sport certifications are valid through their current expiration date. In order to renew your certification beyond its current date, you will need to complete CSOA. That said, it would certainly be valuable for you to complete CSOA now so you can use the information provided and extend your current sport certification.

I completed Coaching Special Olympics Athletes (CSOA) four or five years ago. Do I need to “re-take” that course again every three years.

No. CSOA is only required to be completed once. That said, some people find it helpful to retake the course occasionally as a refresher and doing so will extend your sport certifications to three years from the date of your completion of CSOA.

Renewing Sport Certification

I’ve renewed my sport certification and it didn’t expire for another year. Does this renewal add three years to my current expiration date?

Note: To be considered as a course for renewal, the course must be an actual educational event or activity, not simply a test that confirms current knowledge. The purpose of the Cioach Education and Development system is to continually improve the knowledge, skills and abilities of our coaches, which is not accomplished by taking a test.
