Health Journey
I want to share my health story with you. When I was two years old, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. It impacts the way I learn and move. As a child, I participated in soccer and ballet. I liked them both, but it was hard for me to keep up with the other kids. That is when my parents looked into Special Olympics. My first friend in Special Olympics was Glenn, and he is still a great friend today, almost 20 years later!
At first, I was in soccer and basketball skills. Later I tried athletics, but I didn’t like running in the summer heat, so I switched to swimming. Now I compete in swimming, dance, cheerleading, soccer and basketball. I like all the sports I compete in, and my favorite Special Olympics event is the Summer Games at Towson University. I look forward to it every year.
As I got older, I learned about eating healthy and taking care of my body. Sometimes I struggle with making good choices, but I know that if I look at a menu before I go to a restaurant it helps me select something that is better for me. You can look at the number of calories something has. Staying active is another important step in being healthy. Participating in Special Olympics is a great way to get plenty of exercise. Other good choices to make are drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep every night, and if you do decide to have a cocktail, only have one. Being healthy is important because it helps me stay strong and makes me a better athlete. Making good choices about your body is the best way to have a long and healthy life
