2024 Health Messenger Training

On a vibrant day in 2024, the Health Messenger Training program brought together an enthusiastic group of 25 Health Messengers, comprised of 16 returning athletes and 9 newcomers. This gathering was enriched by the expertise of 7 dedicated Health Mentors from esteemed institutions, including the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work, School of Nursing, Patient Simulation program, Maryland Health Care Access, and Clinical Directors from HA.

As the sun rose, the room buzzed with excitement and collaboration. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions, posed thoughtful questions, and absorbed a wealth of knowledge on a variety of health-related topics. The essence of the day was centered around the role of Health Messengers—Special Olympics athletes trained to become leaders, educators, advocates, and role models within their communities and beyond.

The Special Olympics Maryland’s Health Messenger training program empowers these athletes to take charge of their health and that of their communities. Throughout the sessions, they learned how to create and promote healthy lifestyles, making a significant impact in the lives of those around them.

The training included insightful sessions such as an introduction to Special Olympics Health and the roles of Health Messengers, discussions on health disparities affecting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and practical advice on physical activity and fitness. Participants also explored essential topics like nutrition and hydration, emotional health, effective communication, and how to share their personal stories.

The day culminated in a focus on inclusive health advocacy and athlete leadership, reinforcing the powerful message that every Health Messenger holds the potential to inspire change and lead their communities toward healthier futures.
