2024 Fall Unified Intramurals

As we begin to wrap up 2024, Special Olympics Maryland is excited to share updates on the Unified Sports programming across Maryland college campuses. Throughout the Fall 2024 semester, Special Olympics Maryland teamed up with Towson University, University of Maryland, Bowie State University, and Mount St. Mary’s University to host unified sport opportunities bringing together SOMD athletes and college students of all abilities  to compete and form lasting friendships on an inclusive playing field.

Towson University
Now in it’s 3rd year, Towson University Campus Recreation hosted two six-week seasons of Soccer and Flag Football engaging students from across campus as well as participants from the Hussman Center for Adults with Autism. We’re looking forward to seasons of Basketball and Flag Football during the spring semester!

University of Maryland
Starting it’s 2nd year of programming, Special Olympics Maryland, along with University of Maryland Recreation and Wellness, and TerpsExceed came together for many unified events this semester! After a great Unified Bocce Tournament in September, the Terps enjoyed a fall unified soccer season and unified flag football season! The Unified Terps will also be offering basketball and flag football this spring and are looking forward to another fun Polar Bear Plunge team this February.

Bowie State University
Thanks to the work of a newly formed student committee, Bowie State University is our newest partner school!  This fall, they hosted a Unified Bocce Tournament on campus and are looking forward to a basketball program starting in December.

Mount St. Mary’s University
Throughout the fall semester, the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary’s supported a unified campus through both sports and trainings. Special Olympics Maryland staff enjoyed the opportunity to train their Campus Recreation & Wellness student staff in inclusive sport as we continue to grow unified intramural opportunities. Mount St. Mary’s also held a Unified Bocce tournament with athletes from the Frederick County program and was our first school to offer a Unified TopGolf event. The Mount also provided more than 250 student volunteers for our 35th Annual Fall Sports Festival held on campus! The Club Tennis Team, after volunteering at the fall sports festival, hosted Frederick County Tennis Team for a Unified Red Ball Tournament!
