Athletes are why we exist.
Volunteers are how we exist. Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with Special Olympics Maryland.
Special Olympics would not exist today — and could not have been created — without the time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers. Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience.
Our volunteer base is dedicated and diverse. Practically anyone can get involved. Our volunteers include students, school groups (junior high, high school and college - Special Olympics Maryland requires that all volunteers be 16 years of age or older, unless accompanied by an adult), church groups, law enforcement officials, military personnel, senior citizens, business groups, professional individuals, civic organizations, families, amateur and professional athletes and coaches and teachers, to name a few. Since Special Olympics is a sports organization, a desire to work with sports events will make your volunteer experience even more rewarding. There is no previous experience required.
What does a volunteer do?
You name it, they do it! Special Olympics is a volunteer-driven organization, which means that we need volunteers for just about everything. Volunteers can coach athletes, help in fund raising, coordinate events, give office support, volunteer the day of events, serve on committees and so much more!
When can I volunteer?
You can volunteer YEAR-ROUND! One of the most common misconceptions about Special Olympics is that we offer a once-a-year event. In reality, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition for athletes, which means we need volunteers all the time.
Where can I volunteer?
You can volunteer in your local community year round. You can also volunteer for one of our State-level events, including our Summer Games, Fall Sports Fest, Winter Games and the Spring Classic. |
