Kayaking – Time Trials CANCELLED for Saturday, August 12

We have decided to CANCEL the Kayaking Time Trial event scheduled for Washington College tomorrow, Saturday, August 12 due to unsafe weather conditions expected throughout the day..

Please share this information with all members of your delegation so folks can adjust their plans for the weekend.

This is never an easy decision to make, but based on the current expected strong possibility of t-storms all day in the Chestertown area (from multiple weather forecasts) we are concerned about both the safety of the athletes and other attendees, as well as that the time trials, if held tomorrow, would not give an accurate assessment of the athletes’ abilities and would not lead to good divisioning for the finals (the primary purpose of time trials). We know folks will be disappointed, but it is a decision for the best.

Thank you to Jack Brosius and Al Jank who were key participants in making this decision, along with Kristen Mullins and Melissa Anger. Their input and thorough discussion of options and implications were critical to making the best decision possible.

We will incorporate time trials at the start of the day at the Kayaking Championship event on Saturday, August 26. We will be working through the specifics of the schedule and communicating plans early next week, but all should expect to arrive at Washington College on the 26th a bit earlier than originally planned (currently expect about an hour earlier) and also expect the day to go somewhat later than originally planned (currently plan til 5:00 or 5:30).

We will also be making a decision on how this impacts the number of events in which each athlete will be able to compete and communicating that next week as well. Luckily we have experience in doing both trials and finals in the same day (we needed to do so last year due to excessive heat), plus through Jack’s tireless efforts, we now have the use of a fourth lane for the 100, 200 and 500 races, which should help somewhat with the schedule.

Please plan to join the Kayaking Finals Pre-Competition Webinar on Tuesday evening, August 22 at 7:00 p.m., where we will cover plans in detail and you will have ample opportunity to ask questions. If you haven’t already registered for that webinar, please do so using the following link: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6981616643996156673

Thank you to everyone for all of your work this season. Look for further details early next week.
