As a charity partner of the 2017 Constellation Senior Players Championship, Special Olympics Maryland had the opportunity to showcase our athletes and programs! WBAL-TV 11 Sports Anchor Pete Gilbert reported from Caves Valley Golf Club:
The tournament kicked off with a Unified Putting Challenge, featuring athletes Elaina Camacho, Stephanie Baker, Candace Whiting, Bob Strunge, Andy Moscoso, and Bob Smith captaining teams of Constellation Energy staff members and local media personalities. Highlighting the morning of competition was Senior Player Billy Andrade, who offered SOMD athletes guidance on the putting green!
During the Senior Players Championship, Special Olympics Maryland proved that volunteering can be Unified, too! 34 athletes, family members, coaches, and volunteers enjoyed the action up-close as course hole marshals. Members of our volunteer team enjoyed the opportunity to assist the tournament staff and players and talking with spectators about the importance of Special Olympics Maryland in our communities.
While providing marshals on holes 12 and 13, Special Olympics Maryland was very visible throughout the tournament, thanks to our great athlete ambassadors David Godoy, Josh Smith, Justin Hunsinger, Ralph Gemmill, and Michael Heup – along with their family members, Unified partners, and program volunteers.
The week was capped off with an exciting win for Team Special Olympics Maryland in the PGA Tour Volunteer Challenge presented by Myrbetriq. Receiving 1,664 votes, the volunteer team of Justin Hunsinger, Josh Smith, Ralph Gemmill, and Michael Heup were able to present SOMD President & CEO Jim Schmutz with a check for $10,000. Thanks to all who voted! Each vote made a difference in earning this important prize, which will be used to support athletes across the state.
