Special Olympics Maryland Moves into New Office off Washington Boulevard in Baltimore

Special Olympics Maryland has a new home

The year-round nonprofit recently moved its state office to the Beltway Business Community off Washington Boulevard in Baltimore (3701 Commerce Drive, Suite 103 Baltimore, MD 21227).

The move was made effective Aug. 29, 2011. SOMD’s headquarters was previously located on Progress Drive in the BWI Technology Park in Linthicum. Around 25 full-time SOMD employees will work out of the new office.

“The move was made in the interest of being more efficient to both our donors and our employees.  With the move, we were able to secure a larger office while paying a lower monthly lease,” said Tom Waite, Chief Administrative Officer for Special Olympics Maryland. “In addition to the proximity to major roadways, the new headquarters provide additional conference room, allowing us to open it up to other organizations in need.”

The new office offers a total of 11,325 square feet— 2,000 of which is a multi-use warehouse and storage facility.  The large office space accommodates a need for SOMD’s growing programs in the Counties and through the Interscholastic Unified Sports programs in the schools.

SOMD signed a 10-year lease on the property with Landlord Merritt Properties.

“It has been a pleasure working with Merritt throughout this entire move,” said Dr. Patricia Fegan, President and CEO of Special Olympics Maryland. “Merritt was able to meet all of our building requirements and needs while staying at a very reasonable cost. We look forward to continuing this great relationship.”

Among the amenities of the new office is 1,800 square feet of conference space for large or small meetings.  This space is available for training, area and county meetings, and Board of Director meetings.

Energy saving features includes energy efficient lights, motion detector light switches and programmable thermostats.  These measures will save thousands of dollars over the life of the lease making the funds available for competition and training.

The new space was partially chosen for its convenient location. It is less than a mile away from interstates 695, 95 and 295.
