Sports Development
Sports Development is the development
of a sport so that two goals are achieved:
1) Provide quality and frequent
services to athletes, coaches, families, and volunteers.
2) Support the increase in the number
of athletes participating in the local program.
Between 3-4 Sport-specific Development
Teams (SDTs) are created each year. Each SDT is responsible for driving
the development of the particular sport with an athlete-centered focus.
Besides including people with sport and Special Olympics expertise, each
geographic region of Maryland will also be represented. The following team
member positions include Sport Manager, Coach Education Specialist,
Competition Specialist, Special Olympics Coach, Special Olympics Athlete,
Special Olympics Family Member, Unified Sports Representative, and SOMD
Sport Liaison. There will be a connection from the grassroots through the
state office to ensure collaboration and communication.
