There are two possible ways or processes to becoming a certified coach in Special Olympics Maryland and they are for coaches who are coming to us from different backgrounds.

Track for Coaches without
Sport Experience

Step One: Attend a General Orientation & Protective Behaviors Course.
Please consult with you local county on when the next General Orientation in your area is.  This will cover the Special Olympics Mission, Organizational History & Structure, Intellectual Disabilities, Eligibility, and Rules.

Step Two: Attend a Skills Course that will cover Basic Sport Skills and Strategies.
This will cover but not be limited to Special Olympics Philosophy, Practicum Plans, Fundamental Skills Development, and Competition/Game Understanding.
OR
Participate in the Special Olympics Maryland Mentoring Program
*The coach overseeing the mentor must already be a certified Special Olympics Coach in good standing.

Step Three: Submit your paperwork
In both scenarios you will also have to complete an Application for Certification  with the completed 10 hours of practicum experience. Please ensure that the form has these hours and is signed and dated. Submit completed application to:
