My Name is Terrel Limerick. I am from Rockville, MD.
What sports do you play?
The sports I play are Alpine Skiing, Sailing and Track Field.
Where do you work or go to school? For how long?
I have worked at Special Olympics International for the last 15 years.
How has Special Olympics affected your health in a good way? (Eating better, Lost weight, etc. )
Special Olympics has made me learn how to take care of my body…so I can be a great athlete.
I have learned how to exercise and make better choices about the food I eat every day.
What are some of your hobbies?
Some of my hobbies include professional acting, biking and taking photos.
Who is your favorite sports star or team? Why?
My favorite sports team is the Eagles because I was born in Philadelphia.
Who do you admire the most? Who would you consider your hero? Why?
I admire President Barak Obama the most because He is doing a great job representing the United States all over the world. It makes smile when people tell me, that my twin brother, Joel and I look like him!
What does the future hold for you?
In the future I want to be one of the BEST sailors in the World Games this July. I am the 1st athlete chosen to represent the United States of America in this sport at the World Games. It is a great honor for me to sail with USA team. _I want to make my coach, family and friends proud too.
What is something you want people to know about you?
I would want people to know that my disabilities will never keep me from being a successful person at work, in sports or and in my life.
How has Special Olympics changed your life?
Special Olympics has changed my life because I can do a lot of things that normal people cannot do…like skiing and sailing. People always tell me they wish they could learn how to do these sports and win medals like I do.
When people use the word “retarded” or “retard” it makes me feel sad…when I was younger. But now the word makes me feel strong…because I am good example of overcoming the naysayers. _I have a job, my own apartment and can do a lot of things better than some people without disabilities.
Terrel and his teammates from Montgomery County are at Ski Whitetail today as Special Olympics Maryland conducts Time Trials in advance of the 2015 Winter Games.
Today’s Terrel Time Trial races include Advanced Slalom and Advanced Super G. We will update this record when we get the results.
